Community
Safety Harbor Club has less than 100 homes, no paved roads, and stringent building codes that demand a small environmental footprint. Founder Arthur Mason designed the community in the 1980s so that all houses are nestled in free form winding roads and take advantage of the natural views. Today Safety Harbor Club remains a community of naturalists and environmentally conscious people who’ve decided that living in a sensitive barrier island requires attention and respect to the native vegetation, inhabitants and to Arthur Mason’s original vision.
The Club has one restaurant, Over the Waterfront, a small converted fishing shack.
Neither the Club or the island have a grocery store or similar-type shopping. Island residents and visitors provision on the mainland or use a service to send groceries on the ferry. Members enjoy scheduled events at the clubhouse pool and throughout the island. Mostly however, this community enjoys the daily “accidental” friendly gatherings that can happen on the ferry, fishing docks, gazebo, beaches or even stopped along the road for an impromptu gopher tortoise crossing or wildlife sighting.
